Davos 'framework'; tariff threats withdrawn
After appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland in December 2025, Trump in mid-January 2026 announced tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland over their participation in an Arctic exercise, and said it 'may be a choice' between seizing Greenland and preserving NATO. On January 21, at Davos, Trump rules out using military force to take Greenland, announces a 'framework of a future deal' with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and withdraws the tariff threats.
