Geraldo Lunas Campos dies; death later ruled homicide
Geraldo Lunas Campos, 55, of Cuba, dies at Camp East Montana. The medical examiner rules his death a homicide by 'asphyxia due to neck and torso compression.' The autopsy states he became 'unresponsive while being physically restrained by law enforcement.' ICE first said he died of 'medical distress', then that he had attempted suicide. HRW/ACLU witnesses said he had asked for medication in solitary and cried 'I can't breathe!'

Operation Absolute Resolve: Unilateral US Military Intervention in Venezuela
On January 3, 2026, the US Armed Forces launched Operation Absolute Resolve — bombing infrastructure across northern Venezuela, suppressing air defenses, and conducting a special operations raid on Maduro's compound in Caracas to capture President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The operation was conducted without Congressional authorization or UN Security Council mandate. About 80 people were killed, including 32 Cuban military and security personnel, at least 23 to 43 Venezuelan soldiers and two or three civilians; seven US soldiers were wounded.
